Vehicle windows: A danger to children and medical advice for prevention

With the arrival of the holy month of Ramadan and the increase in social gatherings and evening celebrations, many children tend to express their joy in ways that can be dangerous. In this context, Dr. Alaa Al-Janabi, from Qatif Central Hospital, issued a strong warning about the dangers of car windows, noting that the phenomenon of children hanging out of them has become a leading cause of critical cases in emergency departments.

Context of the phenomenon and the risks of vehicle windows

The phenomenon of children hanging out of car windows or sunroofs while the car is in motion is one of the most dangerous traffic behaviors, noticeably prevalent during holidays and the "Qarqee'an" celebrations. While these actions may seem like innocent expressions of joy, they carry catastrophic risks. Historically, global and local traffic safety statistics have recorded numerous tragic accidents where moments of joy turned into lasting sorrow due to a sudden vehicle stop or a minor collision, resulting in a child being ejected from the car with tremendous physical force.

Dr. Al-Janabi revealed that the hospital has observed a significant increase in children's injuries resulting from the "drooping" phenomenon, describing them as tragic incidents that are increasing alarmingly, which necessitates serious action from parents to strictly implement safety standards.

First line of defense and impact of accidents

The doctor emphasized the absolute prohibition of children's heads or bodies protruding from windows or leaving their seats while a vehicle is in motion. She stressed that using appropriate child safety seats and wearing seat belts constitutes the "first line of defense" against fatal injuries. The consequences of neglecting these precautions extend beyond direct physical injuries, encompassing profound psychological and social impacts on families and communities, not to mention the immense strain these preventable accidents place on the healthcare system.

She also warned of the extreme danger of a child getting out of a car before it has come to a complete stop, explaining that this haste is a major cause of accidents involving falls and being run over, which may result in permanent disabilities or, God forbid, death.

Road safety for pedestrians and cyclists

In a related matter concerning public safety outside vehicles, the doctor emphasized the importance of teaching children the correct way to cross the street safely, starting with stopping at pedestrian crossings, ensuring the road is clear, and never crossing without adult supervision. She also called for restricting the use of bicycles and scooters to designated and safe areas, away from busy traffic lanes, and stressed the mandatory use of personal protective equipment such as helmets, knee pads, and elbow pads to minimize injuries in case of falls.

Prevention of environmental and animal hazards

The advice wasn't limited to traffic safety; it also included environmental and health aspects. Al-Janabi warned against haphazardly handling stray animals. She emphasized the importance of immediately seeking emergency medical attention after a bite or scratch to receive the necessary vaccinations to prevent the serious disease of rabies. She also urged people to avoid approaching large animals like camels and horses without a qualified guide.

In conclusion, the doctor held parents fully responsible for instilling safety concepts in their children's behavior, considering that continuous awareness is the true guarantee for the emergence of a conscious generation capable of protecting itself from surrounding dangers.
