915 customs smuggling cases thwarted in Saudi Arabia in one week

In a significant security achievement reflecting the high level of vigilance of regulatory authorities in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the Zakat, Tax and Customs Authority (ZATCA) announced the thwarting of 915 smuggling across various land, sea, and air ports in just one week. These diverse seizures, which included narcotics and other prohibited substances, are part of the Authority's ongoing efforts and tireless work to enhance security and protect Saudi society from the scourge of contraband in all its forms, which targets the nation's security and stability.

Customs smuggling foiled in Saudi Arabia

Strategic context and development of mechanisms to combat any customs smuggling in the Kingdom

Given Saudi Arabia’s strategic geographic location, connecting three continents, its border crossings have posed a persistent security challenge for decades. Historically, the Kingdom has been a target for organized crime networks attempting to exploit the heavy trade and the Hajj and Umrah pilgrimage seasons to smuggle contraband. To counter this, the Saudi customs system has undergone tremendous development, transitioning from traditional manual inspections to the use of cutting-edge global technologies. Today, the Zakat, Tax and Customs Authority relies on advanced X-ray scanning systems, live detection methods (such as sniffer dogs), and artificial intelligence for risk analysis, making any smuggling attempts extremely difficult and contributing to record-breaking seizure figures.

Details of the seizures: Variety of prohibited items and vigilant monitoring

Official statistics released by the authority revealed that the seized items included 62 types of highly dangerous narcotics. These topped the list with substances such as hashish, cocaine, heroin, and the devastating methamphetamine (crystal meth), in addition to Captagon pills, which primarily target young people. Besides narcotics, 395 other prohibited substances were also seized. Furthermore, customs authorities thwarted 1,942 attempts to smuggle tobacco and its derivatives, along with 12 types of illicitly smuggled currency and two types of weapons and related equipment, demonstrating the comprehensiveness of customs control over all imports and exports.

Security and economic dimensions of thwarting smuggling attempts

Foiling this large number of smuggling attempts is of paramount importance and has a profound impact on several levels. Domestically, these efforts contribute to protecting Saudi youth from the clutches of addiction and reducing crime rates related to drug trafficking, as well as safeguarding the national economy from tax evasion and money laundering linked to the smuggling of cash and tobacco. Regionally and internationally, through these preemptive strikes, the Kingdom reaffirms its firm commitment to international agreements on combating transnational organized crime, thus reinforcing its position as a bulwark against the flow of narcotics into neighboring countries and demonstrating the efficiency of its security and customs agencies in confronting global criminal networks.

The role of the community in supporting ZATCA's security efforts

Believing that security is a shared responsibility, the Zakat, Tax and Customs Authority called upon all citizens and residents to actively contribute to combating smuggling to protect society and the national economy. The Authority provided secure and confidential communication channels for submitting reports, including the dedicated security reporting number (1910), email ([email protected]), and the international number (009661910). The Authority guarantees that all reports related to smuggling crimes and violations of the Unified Customs Law will be handled with complete confidentiality, and offers substantial financial rewards to informants if the information is proven true. This encourages concerted community and institutional efforts to deter smugglers.
