The role of cultural communication in promoting social cohesion and development

Ibrahim Al-Asimi, Deputy Secretary-General of the King Abdulaziz Center for Cultural Communication, reviewed the pivotal role of cultural communication in strengthening social cohesion and supporting sustainable development. This came during a working paper he presented at a session entitled “Governance, Equality, and Empowerment,” held as part of the King Saud University Conference on Sustainable Development 2026. Al-Asimi emphasized that this concept is no longer merely an option, but has become a fundamental pillar in light of the rapid digital transformations the world is witnessing today. He explained its active role in consolidating the values of peaceful coexistence and reducing conflicts arising from cultural misunderstandings between peoples.
The roots of cultural exchange in the Kingdom's historical journey
Given the broader context and historical background, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has always recognized the importance of building bridges of dialogue with diverse cultures. This commitment has been institutionalized through the establishment of national entities dedicated to promoting tolerance and moderation. With the launch of Saudi Vision 2030, cultural exchange a deeper strategic dimension, as the wise leadership has placed great emphasis on human values and moderation. This ambitious vision aims to build a vibrant society capable of positively engaging with the world while preserving its deeply rooted national identity. Conscious openness and the development of human capital are cornerstones of this journey, making the Kingdom a model to be emulated in combining tradition and modernity.
Dimensions and effects of promoting dialogue locally and internationally
The significance of this event and the insights presented are highlighted by its anticipated impact on several levels. Locally, the center contributes to fostering a cohesive social environment, as reflected in official figures and statistics. The center conducted over 496 opinion polls, with broad participation from 642,849 citizens, to accurately and objectively measure indicators of tolerance and social cohesion. Regionally and internationally, these efforts enhance the Kingdom's position as a leading soft power promoting peace and creating an attractive environment for global investments and partnerships.
Pioneering initiatives to build bridges of global understanding
During his presentation, Al-Asimi addressed a range of local and international initiatives adopted by the center. These initiatives include providing advanced training and educational programs aimed at empowering various segments of society and equipping them with effective dialogue skills. He further elaborated on the Kingdom's global efforts, which focus on supporting academic partnerships, promoting tourism, and strengthening humanitarian and relief work. All these avenues work together to contribute to knowledge transfer, correct misconceptions, and enhance Saudi Arabia's positive image in international forums.
In concluding his presentation, Al-Asimi emphasized a fundamental truth: that intercultural dialogue is not merely a theoretical concept confined to seminars and conferences, but rather a daily, practical approach that supports the principles of good governance. This systematic practice directly contributes to building a moderate society, confident in its identity and culture, and prepared to contribute effectively to achieving the comprehensive sustainability that all humanity aspires to.
