Food and Drug Administration efforts during the Hajj season to ensure the safety of pilgrims

The Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) announced its full readiness to provide the best regulatory services, highlighting the crucial role of food and drugs during the 1447 AH Hajj season through a comprehensive and integrated operational plan. This step comes in implementation of the directives of the wise leadership, which places serving the pilgrims of the Holy House of God and ensuring their safety at the forefront of national priorities. The SFDA aims to utilize all available human and technological resources to guarantee a safe and smooth spiritual journey, continuing the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's established approach to caring for the Two Holy Mosques and their visitors.
Early preparations for food and medicine during the Hajj season
The Authority's operational plan is based on integrated monitoring and proactive measures, including strengthening strict oversight of supply chains, enhancing the readiness of field teams, and intensifying inspection tours of regulated facilities. In addition, joint coordination with relevant government agencies is strengthened to ensure rapid response and increased efficiency of monitoring operations during the Hajj season. As part of its ongoing proactive preparations from Sha'ban to Shawwal, the Authority conducted more than 1,400 inspection visits to food and pharmaceutical factories and warehouses, as well as medical device and supply facilities, to verify the integrity of supply chains before the arrival of pilgrims.
The historical development of healthcare and oversight during Hajj
Over the decades, Saudi Arabia has placed great emphasis on developing its healthcare and regulatory systems during the Hajj season. Historically, managing millions of pilgrims has required continuous updates to health protocols to prevent the spread of epidemics and ensure food safety. With the establishment of the Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA), these efforts have become more institutionalized and specialized. Inspection and monitoring mechanisms have evolved from traditional methods to the use of the latest global technologies in drug tracking and food testing, reflecting the Kingdom's longstanding and ongoing commitment to providing a safe and healthy environment for every pilgrim who visits its land.
Comprehensive monitoring of ports and facilities around the clock
The Authority confirmed the participation of a fully integrated technical team working around the clock to cover all regulatory channels, starting from land, sea, and air entry points. This is achieved through strict control of products arriving via air freight belonging to Hajj missions, through inspection points at King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah and Prince Mohammed bin Abdulaziz International Airport in Madinah. This extends to intensifying field inspections of food and pharmaceutical establishments, as well as medical device and supply facilities under the Authority's supervision. The Authority also organized a number of awareness workshops in cooperation with the municipalities of Makkah and Madinah, the Ministry of Tourism, and the Public Health Authority, for workers in factories and catering kitchens, and government agency inspectors, to ensure enhanced compliance with health requirements and the provision of safe meals.
The strategic impact of the success of the regulatory system locally and internationally
The impact of the Authority's successful plans extends far beyond the local level, encompassing crucial regional and international dimensions. Locally, this meticulous organization ensures the protection of public health and prevents any health crises that could affect the community. Regionally and internationally, the Kingdom's success in providing food and medicine to millions of pilgrims arriving from all corners of the globe reinforces the international community's confidence in Saudi Arabia's ability to manage such massive gatherings. This success solidifies the Kingdom's position as a leading global authority in managing and ensuring the safety of large-scale human gatherings, and provides a model to be emulated in implementing the highest standards of quality and health safety.
Government integration to serve the guests of God
The Authority participates annually in serving pilgrims during Hajj seasons as part of an integrated government system aimed at providing the highest quality services. This readiness reflects the fruit of early preparations that began at the end of last year's Hajj season, with the Authority's Hajj Steering Committee commencing its work by holding regular meetings to review outcomes, evaluate performance, and enhance operational readiness, thereby contributing to increased efficiency and achieving the highest quality standards to ensure the safety and security of pilgrims.
