The Ministry of Commerce announces the blocking of an online store for exploiting national symbols

The Saudi Ministry of Commerce announced strict measures, including blocking an online store, after detecting advertisements and products that illegally exploited images of national symbols and state officials in their marketing. This decisive action comes as part of the authorities' commitment to enforcing regulations and preventing any violations that undermine the status of national symbols or use them for purely commercial and profit-driven purposes, which constitutes a clear violation of the Kingdom's regulations.
The Ministry explained in its statement that the violation that led to this decision was the store's exploitation of images of national symbols and officials in marketing its commercial transactions. The Ministry based its decision on the circular issued to commercial establishments, which was issued in implementation of Royal Decree No. (3587) dated 21/1/1440 AH. This Royal Decree prohibits the use of the state emblem and images of symbols and officials in any commercial transactions, in order to protect the dignity of these symbols and prevent their exploitation to mislead consumers or give a false sense of legitimacy to products.
The regulatory context for protecting the state emblem and national symbols
Historically, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has placed great importance on protecting its official emblem and national symbols from any commercial exploitation. Numerous royal decrees and ministerial decisions have been issued over the decades to regulate the use of these symbols, as the state emblem and images of its leaders and officials are considered an integral part of national and sovereign identity. The prohibition against using these symbols in advertisements, publications, and merchandise is not a recent development, but rather an extension of a long-standing policy aimed at completely separating what is sovereign and national from what is commercial and profit-driven. Royal directives have emphasized to all commercial establishments the necessity of fully adhering to these regulations and refraining from placing images of the wise leadership on any consumer products or promotional gifts.
The expected impact of the decision to block an online store that violates regulations
The decision to block an online store that violated these regulations carries significant weight on several levels. Locally, this measure strengthens consumer confidence in the Saudi market, as shoppers recognize that there is strict oversight preventing manipulation or the use of misleading marketing tactics that rely on official symbols to attract attention. It also sends a firm message to all entrepreneurs and online store owners about the necessity of adhering to business ethics and regulations. Regionally and internationally, this decisive action reflects the advanced state of the legislative and regulatory environment in the Kingdom's e-commerce sector, contributing to the creation of a safe and transparent investment environment that aligns with global best practices in protecting national identity and consumer rights.
Ongoing inspection tours to ensure compliance by online stores
In a related context, the Ministry of Commerce indicated that regulations strictly prohibit the use of images and names of symbols, officials, and their names in publications, goods, products, media releases, and personal gifts, considering this a clear violation of regulations and instructions. The Ministry affirmed its continued commitment to conducting intensive inspection tours of markets and online stores to proactively address such violations. It emphasized that it will not hesitate to take all necessary deterrent legal measures against violators and refer them to the competent authorities to impose the prescribed penalties, ensuring that the Kingdom's e-commerce environment remains clean and free from any legal violations.
