Methods of controlling the date palm weevil to protect palm trees | Prevention guidelines

The National Center for Plant Pest and Animal Disease Prevention and Control (Wiqa’) has issued important warnings and guidelines for date palm farmers in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. These guidelines emphasize the necessity of bagging the female date bunches using perforated paper bags immediately after pollination. This crucial preventative measure aims to combat the date palm weevil and protect the fruit in its early stages from the severe damage this destructive insect can cause to the date crop.
The center explained that this measure primarily aims to protect the fruit during the "Hababouk" stage, when the fruit is very small and vulnerable to gnawing and burrowing by the insect's larvae. By implementing these steps, premature fruit drop is prevented, and the bunches and inflorescences are protected from tunnels and insect excrement that can compromise crop quality. The center also indicated that using perforated paper bags exclusively ensures optimal ventilation for the bunches, protecting them from direct sunlight and bird attacks, without negatively impacting the vital processes and normal growth of newly formed fruit.
The historical roots of date palm cultivation and the development of protection methods
The date palm is a deeply rooted cultural and economic symbol in the Arabian Peninsula, having been intertwined with human life for thousands of years. Historically, farmers relied on traditional and simple methods to protect their crops. However, agricultural development and climate change have led to the emergence of more virulent agricultural pests. With the increasing reliance on dates as a staple food and strategic source of income, pest control methods have evolved. The establishment of specialized centers like "Wiqaa" represents a qualitative leap in the history of Saudi agriculture, integrating inherited knowledge with modern scientific techniques to ensure the health of this blessed tree, which forms an integral part of national identity and food security.
Economic and environmental dimensions of pollen weevil control
Combating the date palm weevil at this critical stage is of paramount economic importance at both the local and regional levels. Locally, these measures prevent the pest from becoming an epidemic that could completely deplete the flower stalks of the crop, resulting in significant financial losses for farmers. Regionally and internationally, these steps contribute to maintaining the Kingdom's position as one of the world's largest exporters of high-quality dates. Adhering to the approved technical timing for bagging, coinciding with the end of the pollination season, ensures the highest quality dates and minimizes losses due to early insect infestations.
These recommendations and technical guidelines are part of the integrated pest management strategy being steadily implemented by the Weqaa Center. This comprehensive strategy aims to enhance national food security and support the sustainability of the vital date palm sector, which comprises more than 33 million palm trees distributed across the Kingdom. The combined efforts of government agencies and farmers, along with the application of sound agricultural practices, are the best way to ensure the continued productivity of this important agricultural sector for future generations.
