The National Center for Plant Pest and Animal Disease Prevention and Control (Wiqa’) has issued important warnings and guidelines for date palm farmers in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. These guidelines emphasize the necessity of bagging the female date bunches using perforated paper bags immediately after pollination. This crucial preventative measure aims to combat the date palm weevil and protect the fruit in its early stages from the severe damage this destructive insect can cause to the date crop.
The center explained that this measure primarily aims to protect the fruit during the "Hababouk" stage, when the fruit is very small and vulnerable to gnawing and burrowing by the insect's larvae. By implementing these steps, premature fruit drop is prevented, and the bunches and inflorescences are protected from tunnels and insect excrement that can compromise crop quality. The center also indicated that using perforated paper bags exclusively ensures optimal ventilation for the bunches, protecting them from direct sunlight and bird attacks, without negatively impacting the vital processes and normal growth of newly formed fruit.
