Launch of the project to code the columns in the Grand Mosque with 350 panels
In a pioneering step aimed at facilitating the performance of religious rites, the General Authority for the Care of the Two Holy Mosques announced the launch of the Pillar Coding Project, a significant advancement in the services provided to pilgrims. This strategic project involves the installation of 350 carefully distributed directional signs throughout the Grand Mosque, enhancing the efficiency of spatial guidance and facilitating the movement of worshippers, pilgrims, and visitors, thus ensuring a smooth and accessible spiritual experience, especially given the increased crowds at the Grand Mosque during the holy month of Ramadan.
The development of the spatial guidance system in the Grand Mosque of Mecca
Historically, the Grand Mosque in Mecca has undergone successive expansions throughout different Islamic eras, culminating in the prosperous Saudi era, which has given the Two Holy Mosques great attention. With the increasing numbers of pilgrims and Umrah performers coming from all corners of the earth, the urgent need arose to develop spatial guidance mechanisms. In the past, reliance was limited to simple, traditional signs, but with the major Saudi expansions, specifically the second and third Saudi expansions, the area of the Grand Mosque became so vast that it required innovative engineering and technological solutions. Hence, the idea of developing guidance systems to accommodate these enormous spaces emerged, making this modernization an extension of the Kingdom's ongoing efforts to harness the latest technologies to serve those visiting the Holy Mosque.
An innovative visual identity within the column coding project
The new signage in the Column Coding Project uses specific color codes and identification numbers linked to the names of the main gates and major geographical areas of the Grand Mosque, such as the northern, southern, eastern, and western sides. This intelligent design allows users to pinpoint their location with high accuracy and speed. The Authority also ensured the inclusion of alphabetically ordered sub-letters that align with the flow of pilgrims performing Sa'i and Tawaf, providing a consistent and easily readable guidance system from various angles and distances, thus facilitating the millions of people and preventing overcrowding.
Advanced geometric layout that takes into account architectural features
In implementing this massive project, the Authority took into account the unique architectural characteristics of each area within the Grand Mosque. The circular layout of the arcade building was adopted to align with the movement of pilgrims circumambulating the Kaaba, while the radial layout was implemented in the Third Saudi Expansion to ensure clear visibility from multiple angles. The Second Expansion, on the other hand, followed a parallel horizontal layout that complements the main walkways. These panels extend axially from the Kaaba to the outer gates, providing interconnected guideways that enhance spatial organization and prevent pilgrims from getting lost.
The strategic impact of improving service quality
This new guidance system is expected to have a wide-ranging positive impact at the local, regional, and international levels. Locally, it will reduce the time required for navigation within the Grand Mosque, thus lessening the burden on security personnel and guidance staff, especially during peak times.
