Colombia seizes 27 tons of cocaine in largest international maritime operation

In a major blow to transnational organized crime networks, Colombian President Gustavo Petro announced today that the Colombian Navy had successfully carried out one of the largest drug seizures in the country's history, capturing 27 tons of cocaine in two simultaneous operations across the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. This significant operation is the culmination of intelligence efforts and high-level security coordination between Colombia and several allied nations.
Details of joint operations
President Petro explained that the first operation resulted in the seizure of nine tons of cocaine and was conducted in close cooperation with forces from Australia, Panama, Costa Rica, and El Salvador. This operation targeted several vessels attempting to transport the shipments through complex maritime routes in the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, reflecting the growing capability of naval forces to detect and intercept suspicious shipments in international waters.
The second operation, described as the largest, was carried out with logistical and intelligence support from European police forces and resulted in the seizure of 18 tons of cocaine near the Spanish Canary Islands. This region is a strategic transit point for smugglers attempting to transport drugs from Latin America to European markets via the West African coast.
The context of the war on drugs in Colombia
These seizures are particularly significant given Colombia's position as the world's largest cocaine producer. According to reports from the United Nations and the Office on Drugs and Crime, the area under coca cultivation in Colombia exceeds 250,000 hectares, posing a formidable security and economic challenge to the Colombian government and the international community. The current government is seeking to shift its counter-narcotics strategies to focus on targeting major traffickers and intercepting large shipments, rather than solely targeting small-scale farmers.
The strategic and international importance of the operation
This operation highlights the importance of international cooperation in combating drug trafficking, as cartels have come to rely on complex networks stretching from South America to Australia and Europe. The successful interception of a shipment of this enormous size (27 tons) represents a financial loss of billions of dollars for criminal organizations, helping to cut off their funding sources.
President Petro concluded his remarks by noting that the two operations resulted in the arrest of about 20 suspects, describing the campaign as “one of the largest seizures in history without any fatalities,” which is a tactical achievement to the credit of the participating forces who carried out the raids with high precision and professionalism.
