How to choose the right moisturizer for winter? Health Council tips

Skincare during winter presents a challenge for many, as climate changes and lower temperatures cause the skin to lose its natural oils, leading to dryness and cracking. In this context, choosing the right moisturizer is crucial as the first line of defense for maintaining healthy, radiant skin, a point emphasized by the Gulf Health Council through its awareness platforms.
General context: Why is skin affected in winter?
The skin is the largest organ in the human body and the first line of defense against external factors. Historically and medically, it is well known that winter brings with it a decrease in atmospheric humidity, in addition to the use of indoor heating systems that increase air dryness. These factors combined lead to water evaporation from the outer layer of the skin, weakening its protective barrier and making it more susceptible to irritation and sensitivity. For this reason, moisturizing is a medical necessity, not merely a cosmetic luxury.
A guide to choosing a moisturizer according to skin type
The Gulf Health Council explained that the effectiveness of moisturizing depends not only on the quality of the product, but primarily on its suitability for the skin type. Suitable moisturizers were categorized as follows:
- For oily skin: It is recommended to use water-based (gel) moisturizers, as they are light and quickly absorbed without leaving an oily layer that may contribute to clogged pores or the appearance of acne.
- Normal skin: It is suitable to use “Lotion”, as it provides an ideal balance between hydration and a soft texture, thus maintaining the skin’s natural elasticity.
- Dry skin: It needs intensive care, so it is preferable to use ointments or creams with a heavy consistency, to ensure deep hydration and the formation of a barrier layer that locks in moisture inside the skin for as long as possible.
Terms and conditions for purchasing a healthy humidifier
To ensure you get the most benefit from moisturizing products and avoid any side effects, experts have established several criteria that should be considered when reading the product label:
- Non-comedogenic: Make sure the product carries the phrase (Non-comedogenic), especially for those with oily and combination skin.
- Free from irritants: The moisturizer should be free from perfumes and alcohol, as these substances are major causes of irritation and increased dryness of sensitive skin.
- Suitable for daily use: Choose a safe formula that can be used repeatedly throughout the day to replenish lost moisture.
The importance of skincare and its health effects
Proper hydration has far-reaching benefits beyond aesthetics, extending to health and prevention. Maintaining skin moisture helps prevent common winter skin problems such as eczema, psoriasis, and painful cracks that can become entry points for bacteria. Regionally, given the cold and dry climate of the Gulf countries, ongoing awareness of these practices contributes to improved public health and reduces the need for medical consultations related to seasonal skin conditions.
