National Center for Meteorology: Red alert and heavy rain in Riyadh

issued The National Center for Meteorology a red alert today regarding the expected weather conditions across large parts of the Riyadh region tomorrow, Saturday. This urgent warning alerts citizens and residents to heavy rainfall and its accompanying severe weather effects, which may disrupt daily life, necessitating the utmost caution.
Weather details according to reports from the National Center for Meteorology
According to the official report issued by the center, the unstable weather conditions will affect several governorates and centers in the Riyadh region, namely: Thadiq, Huraymila, Rumah, Shaqra, Dhurma, Marat, As-Sulayyil, Al-Aflaj, and Wadi Ad-Dawasir. These weather changes are expected to begin at 8:00 AM and continue until 8:00 PM on Saturday, April 11, 2026.
The report explained that this heavy rainfall will not be limited to just water falling, but will be accompanied by violent weather phenomena including high-speed winds leading to almost complete lack of horizontal visibility, in addition to hail showers, flash floods in valleys and ravines, as well as strong thunderstorms.
Climate change and the history of rainfall events in the Kingdom
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and specifically the Riyadh region, has witnessed significant shifts in climatic patterns in recent years. Historically, the Arabian Peninsula is known for its arid desert climate, but it experiences seasonal rainy periods known locally as "Al-Wasam" or spring weather instability. Climate records over the past decades have shown an increase in the frequency and intensity of these extreme weather events. This is partly due to global climate change, which has affected the movement of low-pressure systems. In this context, the importance of advanced monitoring systems used by relevant authorities to accurately track these shifts becomes clear, contributing to the protection of lives and property by providing early warnings well before natural disasters occur.
Expected impacts on daily life and infrastructure
This red alert carries significant implications both locally and regionally. Locally, heavy rains and flash floods directly impact infrastructure and road networks, potentially disrupting traffic and temporarily halting some commercial and educational activities as a precautionary measure. On a broader scale, the swift and effective response from state institutions reflects a high level of preparedness in crisis management and minimizing potential economic losses. These proactive measures also enhance public awareness of how to cope with severe weather conditions and provide a regional model for implementing safety standards and effectively managing natural disasters.
Civil Defense guidelines to ensure public safety
In light of these weather forecasts, the General Directorate of Civil Defense and relevant authorities urged all citizens and residents to fully comply with the issued instructions to ensure their safety. They emphasized the importance of staying away from valleys and flood channels, and avoiding areas where water accumulates or pools may form due to heavy rainfall. They also warned of the dangers of using mobile phones in open areas during thunderstorms, stressing the need to remain in safe locations until the warning period ends and the weather stabilizes.
