The penalty for entering border areas is 30 months imprisonment and a fine of 25,000 riyals

The General Directorate of Border Guards renewed its strict warnings to all citizens and residents, specifically those who enjoy desert trips (camping) and those searching for truffles , against approaching or attempting to enter the desert border areas, stressing that these areas are subject to strict security control in accordance with the Border Security System and its executive regulations.
The prescribed penalties are: imprisonment and a fine
The directorate explained in its statement that any negligence in adhering to the regulations and rules defining the border zones will subject violators to severe and uncompromising penalties. These penalties include imprisonment for up to 30 months , a fine of up to 25,000 riyals , or both, given the sensitivity of these areas and their importance to national security.
Truffle season and the allure of the desert
These warnings coincide with the arrival of spring and the seasonal rains (Al-Wasam), a period eagerly awaited by Saudis to venture into the desert in search of truffles, an integral part of the Kingdom's cultural and culinary heritage. This wild mushroom often grows abundantly in pristine areas with minimal human activity, which may tempt some to venture deeper into the desert and approach restricted border areas, unaware of the security risks or warning signs. This necessitates exercising caution and adhering strictly to designated routes and areas.
Security dimensions of border areas
From a security and strategic perspective, border regions are the first line of defense for national security. Countries typically enforce strict measures in these areas to prevent infiltration and smuggling, and to maintain national sovereignty. Therefore, border guard warnings are not only intended to maintain order, but primarily to protect the lives of hikers from potential dangers in these areas and to ensure they do not face legal repercussions for crossing border markers, even accidentally.
Comprehensive land and sea surveillance
In emphasizing the comprehensiveness of security oversight, the Border Guard's efforts extend beyond land to include coasts and territorial waters. Recently, coastal patrols of the Border Guard in Al-Qunfudhah Governorate, Makkah Region, apprehended six Egyptian residents for violating maritime safety regulations.
The violators were caught while fishing in unauthorized areas and in possession of quantities of fish caught. The necessary legal measures were taken against them in coordination with the competent authorities, which confirms the vigilance of the border guards in monitoring any violations that affect the environment or security in all the Kingdom’s ports and borders.
