Meteorology: Exceptional weather conditions and heavy rains expected in Saudi Arabia

The official spokesperson for the National Center for Meteorology, Hussein Al-Qahtani, explained that April witnessed an exceptional weather pattern that significantly impacted most regions of Saudi Arabia. This period was characterized by rainfall ranging from moderate to heavy, affecting all regions without exception, making it one of the most notable weather periods of the year.
Record numbers were recorded during an exceptional weather event in April
Al-Qahtani stated that the monitoring stations of the National Center for Meteorology recorded record-breaking rainfall figures reflecting the intensity of the recent weather activity across the country. The city of Abha recorded the highest rainfall amount, reaching 73 mm, on April 10th. This precise figure clearly reflects the significant rainfall activity experienced by the Kingdom during this period, which necessitated a mobilization of field and awareness efforts to ensure the safety of citizens and residents.
Climate context and changes in the Arabian Peninsula
Historically, Saudi Arabia is known for its arid desert climate, where rainfall is typically concentrated in specific seasons and in limited quantities, with the exception of the southwestern highlands. However, the occurrence of an exceptional weather event affecting all regions reflects significant shifts in climatic patterns across the Arabian Peninsula. These changes come amidst international and regional reports indicating the impact of global climate change on the region, leading to an increase in the frequency and geographical spread of extreme rainfall events during the spring, a period known locally as the "Sarayat" season, characterized by rapid and severe weather fluctuations.
Positive effects of rain on the environment and agriculture
These widespread rains are of paramount importance and have far-reaching positive impacts at both the local and regional levels. Locally, the abundant rainfall contributes to bolstering the Kingdom's strategic water reserves by replenishing groundwater and raising water levels in dams scattered across the country. It also plays a vital role in supporting the agricultural sector and revitalizing vegetation and natural pastures, directly aligning with the objectives of the "Saudi Green Initiative" aimed at combating desertification and increasing green spaces. Regionally, these rainfall events enhance the ecological balance in the area and mitigate the severity of dust storms that typically occur at this time of year.
May weather indicators and the arrival of summer
Regarding future forecasts, Al-Qahtani added that initial indicators for the weather during May, the last month of spring, point to a gradual and relative rise in temperatures. This increase coincides with the gradual approach to the astronomical and climatological arrival of summer. The official spokesperson affirmed that the National Center for Meteorology continues to monitor all weather developments around the clock, issuing necessary reports and early warnings promptly to ensure the provision of accurate and reliable information that contributes to protecting lives and property and supporting decision-makers in various vital sectors.
