Study: Animal fats reduce inflammation and improve metabolic health

In a new scientific discovery that may change traditional notions about nutrition, a recent study by Chinese researchers from Hunan Agricultural University and South University revealed that a diet containing a moderate amount of animal fat may play a crucial role in reducing inflammation in adipose tissue and improving metabolic health, contrary to the prevailing belief that these fats should be avoided altogether.

The researchers explained that consuming animal fats within the recommended range of 25% of total daily calories effectively improves metabolism by regulating the balance of fat tissue. The team conducted a detailed 24-week experiment on mice, in which the study group received a quarter of their calories from animal fat sources.

The findings concluded that animal fat, when consumed in moderation, reduces body fat accumulation more effectively than some vegetable oils. Scientists attribute this to the ability of these fats to increase levels of taurocholic acid, a bile acid that promotes fat absorption and reduces inflammation within the body.

Since ancient times, humans have relied on animal fats as a primary source of energy and survival, due to their high calorie content and essential fatty acids that the body cannot produce on its own. These fats play a crucial role in building cell membranes, protecting vital organs, and regulating body temperature, in addition to being necessary for the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins such as vitamins A, D, E, and K.

While recent decades have seen a major shift towards hydrogenated and refined vegetable oils under the pretext that they are healthier, this study comes to restore the reputation of traditional natural fats, indicating that the problem may not lie in the type of fat itself, but in the quantity and method of processing.

Positive effects on diabetes and obesity

The research team observed that animal fat is rich in beneficial fatty acids that contribute to increased insulin sensitivity, which significantly helps in controlling blood sugar levels. This explains the researchers' observation that traditional diets rich in meat and natural fats are often associated with lower rates of obesity and type 2 diabetes compared to some modern diets that rely excessively on carbohydrates and processed vegetable oils.

These findings underscore the importance of a balanced diet, with moderation being key. Instead of completely eliminating entire food groups, experts advocate focusing on food quality and natural sources to ensure sustainable health.
