Activating field plans in Jeddah to deal with expected rainfall

In response to accurate weather reports issued by the National Center for Meteorology, indicating forecasts of moderate to heavy rainfall, the Jeddah Municipality announced the activation of its field plans in Jeddah to deal with the expected weather conditions. This swift action aims to ensure the safety of lives and property. The municipality has begun taking all necessary measures, including deploying specialized teams and heavy equipment, and raising the level of preparedness and coordination with various relevant authorities to manage the crisis effectively.
Climate memory: How did the bride of the Red Sea develop her strategies?
Historically, Jeddah Governorate has faced significant climatic challenges during the rainy seasons in past years, prompting government agencies to undertake a major overhaul of its infrastructure. These past experiences have contributed to the development of modern strategies for disaster and flood management. Today, the effective implementation of proactive plans reflects a remarkable improvement in early preparedness, with the execution of massive stormwater and flood drainage projects, and the construction of strategic dams and drainage channels. These projects have significantly mitigated risks and protected the urban area from water accumulations that previously impeded traffic and disrupted public life.
15 support centers to support field plans in Jeddah
As part of its early preparations for the current season, the Jeddah Municipality has raised its readiness level to the highest degree by strengthening and equipping 15 support centers strategically distributed across 11 sub-municipalities. This carefully planned geographical distribution ensures a rapid response to any emergency in the various neighborhoods of the governorate. In addition, preparations included carrying out regular maintenance and comprehensive cleaning of the existing stormwater drainage network, and ensuring the complete readiness of vital pumps, heavy equipment, and trained personnel to deal with water accumulations as soon as they occur, thus guaranteeing the smooth flow of traffic and the uninterrupted continuation of daily life.
The economic and social dimensions of successful climate crisis management
The importance of the success of these measures extends beyond the environmental aspect, encompassing broad positive impacts at both the local and regional levels. Locally, the swift intervention ensures the protection of infrastructure and public and private property, and maintains business continuity in one of Saudi Arabia's most important economic cities and vital ports. It also enhances the sense of security and reassurance among citizens and residents. Regionally, Jeddah offers a model to be emulated in managing urban crises and adapting to climate change, which is impacting the entire region, reflecting the Kingdom's commitment to achieving the quality of life goals within Vision 2030.
Continuous awareness and real-time monitoring to ensure safety
Because public awareness is a cornerstone of any successful emergency plan, the Secretariat affirmed its continued close monitoring of alerts issued by the National Center of Meteorology and the Crisis and Disaster Management Center. In parallel, intensive awareness campaigns have been launched across various official channels and social media platforms. These messages aim to guide residents and visitors toward following safety guidelines and avoiding areas prone to flooding and wadis (valleys), thereby supporting the efforts of relevant authorities and facilitating their field operations during periods of rainfall, ensuring the safe passage of everyone through this weather event.
