Three people were killed in the eruption of Mount Dokono volcano in Indonesia today

North Halmahera Police Chief Erlichson Pasaribu explained that there were three dead, including two foreigners and one resident of Ternate Island in eastern Indonesia.
The head of the government's Geological Survey, Lana Saaria, said the early morning eruption was accompanied by a loud bang and a thick plume of smoke that rose to about 10 kilometers above the summit of Mount Dokono in North Maluku province.
She added in a statement, "The ash is drifting north, requiring residential areas and the city of Tupelo to be on alert for volcanic ashfall," noting the risks the ash cloud poses to public health and the potential disruption to transportation services.

Mount Dokono is currently classified at level 3 (the second highest) in Indonesia's four-level volcanic alert system. Since December, the Center for Volcanology and Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) has advised tourists and climbers to stay at least four kilometers away from the volcano's Malupang and Warirang craters.
